Strategy for poker cash games
Some players claim that the only form of real poker is the cash games, because in the online poker tournaments, luck is a much more important factor than in cash games, in which mostly counts raw skill and that’s why many tournament players are not going to be very successful in cash games.
In the top poker tournaments, it is not surprising if an amateur reaches the last table and as such being among the players who get a big prize. However, at the cash games, such a player would have no chance to constantly win if he were playing at the high stakes.
The main difference between cash games and tournaments is that the constant increase in the value of the blinds means that you are forced to act fast, hence increasing the gambling component in the game. Because the blinds keep getting bigger, your chip stack will be getting smaller, relatively to the blinds.
Your standing within a tournament is represented by the umber of blinds you can pay with your current stack: for instance, if you have $1000 and the blinds are $5/$10, you’re in a very good shape, but when the blinds reach $250/$500, it means you are very close to elimination, and you must fight for survival.
Players know that sooner or later, they’ll be forced to fight for their survival within the tournament, so this means that any relatively good hand is played to the maximum. In a tournament, when you have a good hand you must risk everything, or otherwise be eliminated for certain. In cash games, you can notice patterns in the game play of the opponents and play even a marginally good hand when you feel that he has a weak hand, but bluffing.
Cash games at The Mirage also often give you a better feel of the game and as such, the players who play cash games will tend to be better at reading the adversaries’ cards and tell whether they have a strong or a weak hand, whether they are bluffing or not.
It’s been said that while the tournament player will generally play their own hands, the cash game players will often play the opponents’ hands.
Whether you like to play cash games or you like tournaments, it’s important that you use the appropriate strategy for each of them. The gameplay for each of these is very different and you should remember this before starting to play.
